Description: | Signed: yes Description: Ten Kate was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He was one of several contemporaries who favoured historical genre scenes, and he specialized in military subjects. During 1840 to 1841 he travelled in Belgium, Germany, Italy and France; in Paris he took advice from Ernest Meissonier, one of the best known artists working in this genre and who influenced his work. After his return to The Hague he trained at the municipal academy until 1842. Most of the historical scenes for which ten Kate became famous feature soldiers in historical dress from the time of the Thirty Years War. They are often seen relaxing in a tavern in the manner of David Teniers the Younger. | Subjects: | military and war (soldiers); everyday life (tavern) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Kate, Herman Frederik Carel ten (Dutch artist, 1822-1891) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8872... | Go to resource |
