Description: | Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788) was the son of the 'Old Pretender', James Francis Edward Stuart, and grandson of King James VII and II, who had been deposed in 1688. Charles Edward was raised as a Catholic in Italy, where this youthful portrait was possibly painted. The artist has portrayed him in profile, the format traditionally associated with rulers. Popularly known as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', Charles Edward embodied the hopes of the exiled Jacobite dynasty. In 1745 he raised an army to restore his father to the British thrones, but his army was defeated by government forces at Culloden in 1746. | Subjects: | Bonnie Prince Charlie) portrait (Prince Charles Edward Stuart | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Italian School Æ Previously attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8881... | Go to resource |
