Description: | The Virgin Mary is depicted as a young girl being instructed by her elderly father, Joachim, as her mother, Anna, looks on. The angel holding a lily, symbolic of the Virgin's purity, may allude to the future moment when the Archangel Gabriel will announce to the Virgin that she is be the mother of Christ. The vivacious palette, painterly style and exuberant composition led to this being judged an early work by Francesco Solimena, whose later paintings became more sombre and classical. The composition is executed on copper, which artists considered an ideal support for smaller-scale pieces. | Subjects: | St Anne Joachim) religion (Education of the Virgin Virgin Mary | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) Æ Previously attributed to Conca, Sebastiano (Italian painter, 1680-1764) Previously attributed to Crosato, Giovanni Battista (Italian painter, 1686-1758) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8883... | Go to resource |
