Description: | Signed: yes Description: Though he treated other subjects, Henri-Joseph Harpignies was primarily a landscape painter and he achieved considerable renown, winning medals at several Salons. Harpignies travelled widely, but he is mainly associated with the landscapes of central France. It is in this region that the medieval town of Avallon is found, which, as the artist's inscription tells us, provided the subject for this picture. The luminosity and the dynamic handling are typical of Harpignies' work, and the influence of Corot and the Barbizon School are very evident. | Subjects: | landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Harpignies, Henri-Joseph (French painter and printmaker, 1819-1916) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8887... | Go to resource |
