Description: | The subject of peasants cheerfully relaxing outside an inn is a typical theme of Adriaen van Ostade, whose paintings were influenced by the work of his supposed fellow-pupil Adriaen Brouwer. The small scale and the composition, which includes a rustic building dominating the right half of the scene, are also typical features of Ostade's work. But although it was purportedly signed by Ostade, this painting is thought to be a copy or pastiche after him, and it may have been made in the nineteenth century when such pictures enjoyed great popularity. | Subjects: | figure; everyday life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ostade, Adriaen van (Dutch draftsman and painter, 1610-1685) Æ Manner of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8888... | Go to resource |
