Description: | Having come to pay homage to the new-born Christ, the shepherds tentatively enter the presence of the Holy Family. The Virgin kneels before her child, and Saint Joseph is shown as an elderly man praying in the background. The grand but dilapidated building signifies the passing of the Old Dispensation. A different version of this subject attributed to Marcellus Coffermans (Metropolitan Museum, New York) is likewise painted on a very small scale and also includes a group of three angels at the top of the composition. | Subjects: | Nativity); figure; animal (ox angel Christ religion (Adoration of the Shepherds ass) Virgin Mary Holy Family | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Coffermans, Marcellus (Netherlandish painter, active 1549, died after 1575) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Lucas van Leyden (Netherlandish artist, ca. 1494-1533) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8890... | Go to resource |
