Description: | Youngest daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie de Médicis, Henrietta Maria married Charles I of England in 1625. She supported the King loyally, although the English were suspicious of her Catholic faith. She contributed to the Civil War effort by bringing munitions from France and pawning her jewellery. The Bristol painting is based on a portrait of the Queen in the Royal Collection painted by Anthony van Dyck in 1632, for which the King paid £20. The many variant copies include another version at the National Portrait Gallery which shows the Queen in a yellow dress. | Subjects: | portrait (Queen Henrietta Maria) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Dyck, Anthony van (Flemish painter, 1599-1641, active in England) Æ After Previously attributed to British School Previously attributed to Dyck, Anthony van (Flemish painter, 1599-1641, active in England) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8895... | Go to resource |
