Description: | Traditionally the five senses were represented by allegorical figures or sometimes by gallant couples of gemtlemen and ladies. Artists such as David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade and Adriaen Brouwer depicted the five senses in a more accessible manner, with peasant characters and humour. In this scene representing smell, a man tends his garden stopping to enjoy the aroma of a small yellow flower. It is interesting to note that the artist has included St Peter's Church in Rome as a backdrop to a typical Dutch scene. | Subjects: | allegory (Five Senses); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Teniers, David, II (Flemish painter, 1610-1690) Æ Attributed to after | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8904... | Go to resource |
