Description: | This life-sized interpretation of the Adoration of the Magi is mostly based on traditional iconography, depicting the Magi as three kings paying homage to Christ. The eldest, Caspar, appropriately dressed in rich yellow robes, kneels before the Virgin and Child. Having placed his crown at the Virgin's feet he offers his gift of gold, a symbol of Christ's kingship. Behind him are Balthazar, the black king, and Melchior, with his gift of myrrh, an ointment used in embalming. The sumptuous red of his cloak reinforces the significance of his gift as a reminder of Christ's fate. | Subjects: | religion (Nativity Adoration of the Magi); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) Æ Attributed to circle of Attributed to imitator of Cortona, Pietro da (Italian draftsman and painter, 1596-1669) Attributed to Italian (Neapolitan) School Previously attributed to after Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch painter, draftsman and printmaker, 1606-1669) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8917... | Go to resource |
