Description: | This work was probably inspired by the works of Adriaen Brouwer who was highly influential in early seventeenth-century Flemish genre painting. The rowdy indulgence of his often humorous tavern scenes gave a lively perspective on peasant life. The culture of smoking, drinking and gaming was one of which he enjoyed first-hand experience. Although Brouwer's popularity dwindled in the eighteenth century, during his own lifetime he was held in high esteem. Other artists as prestigious as Rubens and Rembrandt purchased his works for their collections. Even before he died, many were imitating and copying his compositions. | Subjects: | figure; everyday life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Brouwer, Adriaen (Flemish painter, born 1605 or 1606, died 1638) Æ Imitator of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8919... | Go to resource |
