Description: | Saint Andrew was one of Christ's disciples. He is usually identified by the x-shaped cross, or saltire, on which he was martyred. That is the episode represented in this painting by Luis Tristán, a follower of El Greco who was active in Toledo during the first quarter of the seventeenth century. The strong modelling of the saint's body and the use of chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark) suggest Italian influences that Tristán could have absorbed during his stay in Rome and Milan. The expressive intensity and naturalism of the figure, isolated and illuminated against a bare, dark landscape, are characteristic of his images of saints. | Subjects: | religion (Martyrdom of St Andrew) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Tristán de Escamilla, Luis (Spanish painter, ca. 1587-1624) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8953... | Go to resource |
