Description: | Mme de Maintenon (1635-1719) was first the wife of Scarron, a well-known seventeenth-century comic writer, who was many years her senior. Thanks to him she met many figures of the literary society of the time. After his death she became the governess of Louis XIV's illegitimate children with Mme de Montespan. The king thought highly of her and made her a Marquise. He subsequently married her in secret in the winter of 1685-1686, after the death of the queen. But due to the difference in social status, their marriage was morganatic. The little boy in the picture may be the Duc du Maine, Louis XIV's son with Mme de Montespan, born in 1670. | Subjects: | portrait (Mme de Maintenon); religion (St Cecilia angel) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Jouvenet, Jean Baptiste (French painter, 1644-1717) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8965... | Go to resource |
