Description: | This image of Christ wearing the crown of thorns and a knotted rope around his neck may have been inspired by the theme of the Ecce Homo, or Christ shown to the people. The unknown painter adapted the traditional subject to mid-seventeenth-century sensibilities. The group of executioners, the crowd of spectators and the usual setting in Pilate's palace have been omitted. The isolated, vulnerable figure of Christ, with his eyes raised to God the Father and his arms outstretched defencelessly, appeals directly to the viewer, who is invited to feel his suffering. | Subjects: | Christ) religion (Passion | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Pereda y Salgado, Antonio (Spanish painter, 1611-1678) Æ Attributed to school of Previously attributed to school of Cerezo, Matteo, the younger (Spanish painter, 1637-1666) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8967... | Go to resource |
