Description: | Pieter Verelst was active in Antwerp, where he trained with Gerrit Dou. In this tavern scene, three men smoke and drink around a table, displaying the easy conviviality and the humorous tone that characterise the genre. The figure with a pointed hat appears in other works painted by Verelst between 1640 and 1660, when this image was probably produced. The consumption of tobacco and alcohol was associated with the disorder of the inn. The state of intoxication of the man on the left exemplifies the incapacity and lack of physical control that prompted contemporary moralising warnings against these activities. | Subjects: | everyday life (tavern) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Verelst, Pieter (Dutch painter, ca. 1618-after 1671) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8969... | Go to resource |
