Description: | The Bowes Museum owns several works by Cassinelli, but this is quite different from the others, which represent large vessels and busy harbours. Here the artist concentrated on the beauty of the evening, emphasising its peacefulness. It is very remote from the business of Le Havre's harbour. The big ships are relegated to the background; the artist favoured the small fishermen's boats, the flat waters and the large expanse of beautifully lit sky to create a timeless scene. Cassinelli was a friend of Boudin's, and it appears that the two artists took a trip together in 1860: on 15 January 1860 Boudin wrote in his diary that he 'had planned to make with Cassinelli varied seascapes'. Cassinelli may have been influenced by Boudin's work for his seascapes. | Subjects: | marine; figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Cassinelli, B.
