Description: | Signed: yes Description: This painting is typical of the decorative peasant genre scenes which became popular among the Parisian bourgeoisie in the second half of the nineteenth century. A young girl is shown cutting rags to dress her doll which is propped up on a wooden chair in front of her. The girl's own clothes are indicative of provincial costume. Behind her the stone fireplace, basket and lamp convey a comfortable but modest peasant dwelling. Rather than showing the misery and deprivation of the poor, the girl's playful activity and the simple interior show the contentment of a humble peasant existence. | Subjects: | figure; interior | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Sauvage, Philippe-Francois (French artist, active late 19th century) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8979... | Go to resource |
