Description: | Signed: yes Description: Jacques Stella (1596-1657) spent eighteen years in Italy where he became a close friend of Poussin. On his return to France he became Cardinal Richelieu's official painter. This classical picture depicts the quiet moment of wonder shared by Mary and Joseph at the birth of Christ. St Joseph is Poussinesque and the flesh of the child and the Virgin Mary is very smooth and porcelain-like. In the background an angel can be seen announcing the birth to the shepherds, one of whom raises his arms in wonder. The broken architecture in the foreground is not just a picturesque detail but also a symbol for the end of pagan religion. | Subjects: | religion (nativity scene) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Stella, Jacques (French painter and printmaker, 1596-1657) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8990... | Go to resource |
