Description: | The female saint in this painting may be identified as Saint Catherine of Alexandria. According to the Golden Legend, Saint Catherine was tortured on a wheel with spikes before her martyrdom. She is often represented with the wheel, a palm and the martyr's crown. Probably produced in the nineteenth century, this work replicates late fifteenth-century Florentine models, possibly a fragment of an altarpiece depicting the Virgin and Child with saints. | Subjects: | religion (St Catherine(?)) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Italian School Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8992... | Go to resource |
