Description: | This painting is currently ascribed to the circle of the Genoese painter Bernardo Strozzi, who worked in Venice during the first half of the seventeenth century. Strozzi's style in the 1620s and 1630s reveals the influence of Neapolitan Caravaggism, which reached Genoa through Domenico Fiasella. The book held by the saint in this painting identifies him as one of Christ's apostles. The dramatic use of chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark) and the naturalistic depiction of the head are characteristic of the Neapolitan school. | Subjects: | religion (Apostle) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Strozzi, Bernardo (Italian painter, 1581-1644) Æ Attributed to circle of Previously attributed to Franchi, Lorenzo (Italian painter, 1565-1632) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8998... | Go to resource |
