Description: | Clothing suggests that this painting dates from the end of the seventeenth century, under the reign of Louis XIV (1638-1715). The Order of the Saint-Esprit, characterised by the star with the dove in its centre, was the highest French order. The King was its grand master, and only 100 knights were allowed to be a part of it. The members included the king's children, princes of royal blood, and foreign princes, as well as a few others. The young man shown in the picture would therefore have been of very high birth in order to be awarded such an medal. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: French School Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8999... | Go to resource |
