Description: | Signed: yes Description: A pupil of Baron Gros, Court was a highly skilled and respected artist. As well as historical subjects, he painted a number of portraits for French dignitaries. This painting was probably a study for a larger more formal work. The skilled brushwork is loose and highly expressive. There is some confusion as to the identity of the sitter; however, current opinion tends toward the French historian, orator and politician François Guizot (1787-1874). Renowned for his writings on European political history, he also played a leading role in the government of the July Monarchy. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Court, Joseph-Désiré (French painter and museum director, 1797-1865) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9004... | Go to resource |
