Description: | Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult (1769 -1851) was an important military and political figure. In 1804 he was among the first to be appointed Marshal by Napoleon. He was exiled for a short period at the second restoration but was recalled in 1819 and given back his title. The portrait depicts him in his full military regalia, including the Marshal's baton decorated with the Napoleonic insignia. Considering the age of the sitter, however, it is likely that the work was painted after his reinstatement and not during Napoleon's reign. Soult later became prime minister under the rule of King Louis-Philippe. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Court, Joseph-Désiré (French painter and museum director, 1797-1865) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9005... | Go to resource |
