Description: | This painting represents the moment just before the beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The composition is simplified and reduced to the half-length figures of the Saint and his executioner. The dramatic chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark) and strong modelling suggest that this might be a copy of an early seventeenth-century Neapolitan painting, possibly of a work by Caravaggio's follower Giovanni Battista Caracciolo. | Subjects: | religion (Martyrdom of St John the Baptist) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Italian (Neapolitan) School Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9006... | Go to resource |
