Description: | This is probably a copy of a picture by Jusepe Ribera. The theme of St Peter's tears was often represented by El Greco and by his follower Luis Tristán de Escamilla, to whom this work was attributed in the past. The existence of other copies by painters such as David Teniers gives an idea of the popularity of Ribera's original. Saint Peter is depicted weeping after he denied Christ three times, as predicted at the Last Supper. This subject was especially favoured during the period of the Counter-reformation, when it was interpreted as a reference to the importance of repentance. | Subjects: | religion (St Peter) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ribera, Jusepe de (Spanish painter and printmaker, baptized in 1591, died 1652, active in Italy) Æ Attributed to after Previously attributed to Herrera, Alonso de (Spanish painter, 1555-1624) Previously attributed to Tristán de Escamilla, Luis (Spanish painter, ca. 1587-1624) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9010... | Go to resource |
