Description: | The subject of this painting has not been securely identified. The elderly man could be Vulcan, Venus's husband, to whom she presents her baby son Cupid. The figures of the young woman and the child reveal the influence of Venetian painting. They are represented by means of soft, fluid brushstrokes and a warm, light palette. The naturalism and the contrasting light, which defines the figures of the man and the elderly woman in the background, can be associated with the Caravaggesque tradition, under whose influence Antonio Carneo worked during the years he spent in Udine between 1660 and 1689. | Subjects: | mythology (Venus Vulcan and Cupid(?)) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Carneo, Antonio (Italian painter, 1637-1692) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Cignani, Carlo (Italian painter, 1628-1719) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9012... | Go to resource |
