Description: | Saint Peter is represented with the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven and a book that might refer to the epistles that he wrote or to the Scriptures. Like the Spanish painter Jusepe Ribera, with whom he worked in Naples, Francesco Fracanzano choose a street type as his model for a religious figure. Saint Peter appears as a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee and he is depicted with the naturalism that defines seventeenth-century Neapolitan painting. The broad brushstrokes and the use of chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark) are characteristic of Fracanzano's style. | Subjects: | religion (St Peter) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Fracanzano, Francesco (Italian painter, 1612-1656) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to March, Esteban (Spanish painter, ca.1590-1660) Previously attributed to Ribera, Jusepe de (Spanish painter and printmaker, baptized in 1591, died 1652, active in Italy) Previously attributed to the Master of the Pozzuoli Christ in the Garden | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9013... | Go to resource |
