Description: | The two central characters of this scene, the duchesse de la Vallière and Louis XIV, are dressed up and represented acting a scene from a play by Guarini, Il Pastor Fido. Mirtillo, a shepherd, is enamoured of the nymph Amarillis. To gain her confidence he dresses as a woman and joins her and her maidens in a kissing game. He wins and is given a crown by Amarillis. Beyond the acting, the scene may also be a way to show the king's devotion and affection for his mistress, as he is kneeling by her, whilst the putti are throwing their love arrows at them. The dog symbolizes faithfulness. | Subjects: | mythology (Amarillis and Mirtillo); portraits (Louis XIV and the Duchesse de la Vallière); landscape; figure; animal (dog) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Mytens, Jan (Dutch painter, ca.1614-1670) Æ After | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9026... | Go to resource |
