Description: | Mme de Montespan (1641-1707) was famous for her beauty and became Louis XIV's favourite mistress around 1670. She remained so for about ten years. The six children she bore to the King were all legitimized. She was also an art lover and protected writers such as Corneille, Molière and La Fontaine, as well as the composer Lully. She is represented in front of a Classical background and landscape which hint at her love for the arts, whilst her elaborate dress and visible jewellery give an idea of her status. | Subjects: | portrait (Mme de Montespan) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Mignard, Pierre, I (French painter and portraitist, 1612-1695) Æ Attributed to studio of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9029... | Go to resource |
