Description: | This bozzetto, or preliminary version of a composition, represents an episode from the Apocryphal book of Judith 11-13. Luca Giordano depicted the Jewish heroine displaying the head of the Assyrian general Holofernes to her people. The walls and towers in the background belong to the town of Bethulia, which had been besieged by Assyrian troops. Giordano was renowned for his speed of execution and gift of improvisation. He made numerous oil sketches for frescoes, like the decorations for the Certosa di San Martino at Naples, with which this image has been associated. | Subjects: | religion (Judith) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Jordán, Esteban (Spanish painter, sculptor, and architect; n.c.1530-m.1598) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9034... | Go to resource |
