Description: | This tavern scene is characteristic of Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder's production during his years in Amsterdam, before he moved to England in 1674. The picture shows a group of peasants smoking, drinking and gambling in an inn. In this setting, the depiction of a man playing with his pipe conveyed burlesque and licentious associations. Tobacco smoking was not entirely a respectable pastime in the middle decades of the seventeenth century. The state of the three men on the right suggests that its intoxicating effects were regarded by the middle classes as similar to that of drinking alcohol. | Subjects: | everyday life (tavern); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Heemskerck, Egbert van, the elder (Dutch painter, born 1634 or 1635, died 1704, also active in England) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9036... | Go to resource |
