Description: | Landscape paintings with hermits were popularised by David Teniers II, following the tradition of Josse de Momper. The shovel and the book suggest the combination of physical work and meditation that summarised the ideal Christian life for the Carmelite Order. Carmelite convents often included within their bounds vast hermitages, or 'holy deserts', where friars and nuns could retreat and meditate in solitude. The importance of individual prayer and of the contemplative life was emphasised by Saint Teresa of Avila, who promoted the reform of the Order in the late sixteenth century. | Subjects: | landscape; figure; religion | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Teniers, David, II (Flemish painter, 1610-1690) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9036... | Go to resource |
