Description: | In this bust-length portrait, the sitter wears a simple white collar over his armour. The painting was formerly described as the portrait of a burgomaster, although the identity of the man in armour is at present unknown. The painting follows the formula that made Bartholomeus van der Helst the leading portrait painter in Amsterdam. It shows similarities with his early works, produced before 1640. After that date, van der Helst's technique became more fluid and his treatment of costumes was more detailed. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Helst, Bartholomeus van der (Dutch painter, 1613-1670) Æ Attributed to circle of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9046... | Go to resource |
