Description: | The subject of this bozzetto, or preparatory sketch, was previously identified as the birth of Saint John the Baptist, forerunner and herald of Christ. However it is likely to represent the birth of the Virgin, which Solimena painted in about 1690, when he was working on his series of frescoes for the church of San Paolo Maggiore, Naples. Oil sketches had a significant role Solimena's creative process. This image shows the free, painterly handling and the clarity of the composition which are characteristic of his production. | Subjects: | religion (Birth of the Virgin) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9049... | Go to resource |
