Description: | Images depicting the Virgin and Child were a favourite theme of Luis de Morales. He and his workshop produced a number of different versions of this subject. This picture is a copy or a workshop version of the Virgin and Child in the National Gallery, London. The infant Christ lifts the Virgin's veil to hold her breast in an image which recalls representations of the infant Christ suckling his mother's breast. Morales's work combines archaising elements with the influence of contemporary Flemish and Italian painting, and particularly the work of Leonardo da Vinci. | Subjects: | religion (Virgin and Child) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Morales, Luis de (Spanish painter, ca. 1509 - ca. 1586) Æ After Attributed to circle of Morales, Luis de (Spanish painter, ca. 1509 - ca. 1586) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9050... | Go to resource |
