Description: | It is uncertain which battle of the second or third Anglo-Dutch War this painting commemorates. Since it is clearly painted from an English perspective, a possibility is the Battle of Lowestoft, which Pepys described as 'a great victory, never known in the world'. The painting is the work of a follower of Willem van de Velde the younger, who worked in England from the 1670s. The dramatic scene includes a sloop rescuing the crew of a sinking ship, a motif probably borrowed from Willem van de Velde's The Battle of the Texel, 21 August 1673 (about 1680, National Maritime Museum). | Subjects: | history (Battle of Lowestoft); marine; military and war | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Velde, Willem van de, II (Dutch painter, 1633-1707) Æ Attributed to circle of Attributed to British School Attributed to Dutch School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9156... | Go to resource |
