Description: | Bartolomé Estebán Murillo was popular in his own time, and held the position of first President of the Seville Academy (1660). His work typifies the works of the Counter-Reformation. St Anthony was a Franciscan friar and Doctor of the Church. According to legend, he saw a vision of the Christ Child whilst working in his room. Also known as St Anthony of Padua and the Christ Child, this was a popular theme during the Counter-Reformation which initiated the cult of the infant Christ. In the highly-charged atmosphere of Counter-Reformation art, the Christ Child is depicted as sweet and appealing emphasising his humanity and accessibility. | Subjects: | religion (St Anthony of Padua infant Christ) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Murillo, Bartolomé Estebán (Spanish painter and draftsman, 1618-1682) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9162... | Go to resource |
