Description: | Signed: yes Description: Willem Van de Velde the Younger and his father were renowned as the greatest Dutch marine painters of their day. They both emigrated to England in 1674 and were employed in the service of King Charles II. The accurate depiction of the ship enabled it to be identified as the seventy-gun galleon, the 'Hampton Court' built for the King's first navy. A drawing of the 'Hampton Court' by Willem the Elder (1611-1693) is in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, London. Such ship portraits do not appear in England before Van de Velde as no native artist seems to have had the required skill. The van de Veldes were also experienced sailors which enabled them to record the appearance of sea battles and ships at sea directly from a small boat. | Subjects: | marine (the Hampton Court) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Velde, Willem van de, II (Dutch painter, 1633-1707) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9162... | Go to resource |
