Description: | This painting of the Holy Family depicts a crowned Madonna with the Christ child standing on her lap. The child holds a bunch of grapes, symbolising the Eucharistic wine, and so His own blood as the Redeemer. Mary holds an apple or orange in her hand, and the child is again touching this piece of fruit; it is the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, and so again identifies the child as the future Redeemer, saving mankind from Original Sin. Both mother and child have gold haloes, but the elderly, bearded Joseph seated to the left, and slightly back, does not. | Subjects: | religion (Holy Family; Virgin and Child); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Flemish School Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9195... | Go to resource |
