Description: | Signed: yes Description: Daubigny was one of the first plein-air painters to complete sizeable canvases directly from nature. As he progressed in this open-air technique, his brushwork became increasingly direct, rapid and free. Les Laveuses is representative of Daubigny's best such work, giving the impression of capturing the scene at the moment that Daubigny saw it. The subtle harmony in grey and green and the horizontals of the hills, banks and line of storm clouds all help to establish the dominant restful mood and pervading air of quiet. A massive area of cloudy sky looms over the river running from the left foreground and receding towards bushy area in the background. | Subjects: | landscape; everyday life; figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Daubigny, Charles François (French landscapist, 1817-1878) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=9195... | Go to resource |
