Description: | These women are preparing food for distribution to Second World War shelterers at Wood Green Underground station. The service started in September 1940, and the full scheme was in operation by December 1940 when this image was taken.
Every night, up to 60,000 people sheltered in the Underground. It was one of few refuges for people who lived in high-density housing. One advantage it had over the shelters at ground level was that the bombs could not be heard this deep underground, so some people managed to snatch a few hours' sleep.
The food in the canteens included meat pies, pasties, apple turnovers and tea, hot chocolate and milk. It seems from the boxes that some of the food was made by J Lyons and Co. Lyons was one of the largest food catering companies in the world at the point this photograph was taken. One of the reasons for its success was the high quality of its food combined with its value for money. | Format: | image/jpeg | Publisher: | London Transport Museum | Rights holder: | Transport for London | Subjects: | Power and Politics | Temporal: | Dec 1940 | Source: | London Transport Museum | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
