Description: | A patient is taken by stretcher from the medical aid post at Notting Hill Gate Underground station. The station is being used as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War.
First aid posts with at least one fully trained nurse and sometimes a doctor were established in every station. Up to 200 nurses and 30 doctors were employed by London Transport for this purpose.
The first stretcher-bearer's armband shows he is a member of the Civil Defence. These voluntary workers took on many roles, among them Air Raid Precaution (A.R.P.) wardens, who checked whether people were complying with the strict Blackout regulations after dark; or jobs in the fire service or the Women's Voluntary Service. | Format: | image/jpeg | Publisher: | London Transport Museum | Rights holder: | Transport for London | Subjects: | London at War | Temporal: | 13 Dec 1940 | Source: | London Transport Museum | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
