Description: | A member of staff demonstrates loading or unloading bedding from place no 38. This shelving was used for the storage of shelterers' bedding during Second World War. The storage facility was next to Leicester Square Underground station.
Shelterers initially left their bedding in the station during the day. It was not only a fire hazard but also cluttered or blocked passenger areas, so London Transport provided storage space. The company also provided waterproof sleeping bags for shelterers.
Every night around 60,000 shelterers took refuge in the Underground: it was one of the few places people who lived in high-density housing could go. Since the bombs could not be heard this deep underground, some managed to snatch a few hours' sleep. | Format: | image/jpeg | Publisher: | London Transport Museum | Rights holder: | Transport for London | Subjects: | London at War | Temporal: | 30 May 1941 | Source: | London Transport Museum | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
