Description: | A 'gate-stock' train on the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead railway (part of today's Northern line) is entering a crossover tunnel 200 feet (61 metres) below the streets of Hampstead. This is one of the deepest parts of the Underground network.
These cars had open-ended platforms enclosed by metal gates at each end of the carriage. A guard or gateman travelled on the platform of each car. It was his job to open and close the gates at stations using the large levers mounted there.
Until the introduction of air-operated sliding doors in 1919, gate-stock provided the fastest form of passenger loading. This arrangement was labour-intensive since a gateman was required for each vehicle.
