Description: | This is the last semaphore signal on the original Underground system being removed in November 1953. It was at Ealing Common. (Semaphore signals still continued on the Metropolitan Railway.) The new colour-light signal is in place below. This photograph was taken by Topical Press Agency.
The photo shows a dual-aspect colour signal, the simplest kind. This acts as a direct replacement for the semaphore stop signal. The light shows red if the next block is occupied by a train ahead. The green aspect signals 'clear to proceed'.
The diagonal bar of lights above the signal is the junction route indicator that shows which way the points were set at a junction. This is a British way of signalling which shows the drivers the route, while leaving it up to them to determine the speed they should be going. In the USA and Europe, signals also stipulate the speed that the train should travel.
