Description: | The church was designed by G.E.Street and is considered to be a very good example of this architect working to a modest budget. The land had been given by Mrs Beauchamp of Finefield and the church was the result of the efforts of the people of Chalvey who raised some money by subscription. In 1855 the people had drawn up a petition which they presented to their curate, the Rev John Robertson asking him to assist their efforts. In 1859 the people were rewarded when a committee was formed and an appeal launched for subscriptions for the new church. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert gave £100 and the Duke of Leeds, as principal landowner, gave £100. G.Harley of Slough was the builder. The first stone was laid on 4th July 1860. The building cost £2700. The church was consecrated on the 7th September 1861.
The external walls have knapped flint and brick bands. Much of the stained glass is by C.E Kempe and was paid for by money left by Mrs. Beauchamp in her will. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Rights holder: | Slough Library | Subjects: | St. Peter's Churches ; Chruch of England | Temporal: | start=1860-01-01; end=1910-01-01; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Creator: | Copy by Reg Harrison | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
