Description: | The ladies in the photograph appear to be wearing their finest clothes and hats. Flooding appears to be somewhat frequent in Chalvey due to the low lying land and the number of streams and ditches crossing the area and draining into the Thames.
In 1858 Chalvey Infants School school was used for church services under Bishop's license as the new church of St. Mary's together with St. Laurence Upton were insufficient for the needs of the parish. The services were well attended and this gave rise to a wish for a new church to be built in Chalvey. Weekly subscriptions were sufficient to provide for the new church, and a left a surplus which went towards the building of a new Infant School room.
By 1950 the school was no longer in use and the building was used as a store. In about 1960 the building was demolished to make way for new housing. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Rights holder: | Slough Library | Subjects: | Schools ; Floods Chalvey Infants School | Temporal: | start=1830-01-01; end=1960-01-01; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Creator: | Copy by Reg Harrison | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
