Description: Small square section bowl. Hard paste porcelain, possibly moulded, painted underglaze in blue and overglaze in red, pale red, green, aubergine and black outlining and gold. Square, with deep sides tapering towards the bottom, with concave facets at each corner; high foot and recessed flat glazed base. The rim dips slightly in the middle of each side and rises at the corners, and is edged in a dark brown glaze. The inside is painted in the middle with a naturalistic peony spray in underglaze blue outline and wash within two narrow blue lines, and below the rim with a pendant motif in red and pale red. On the outside, two opposing sides are similarly decorated with a dragon amid cloud scrolls on a spotted green ground; and the other opposing two sides with symmetrical Karakusa (arabesque pattern) designs. The four concave facets have flower and leaf sprigs in panels. Narrow blue lines run round the panels on all sides. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/terms.htm | Publisher: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Rights holder: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Subjects: | bowl porcelain Unknown | Temporal: | name=18th century; start=1700; end=1800 | Source: | Fitzwilliam Museum | Creator: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Identifier: | http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/opacdire... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | text/html | Go to resource |
