Description: Plaque, ivory, carved in relief. In the centre is a draped table, which recedes diagonally from the picture plane. On it is held the naked Child with nimbus, and to the left stands the High Priest about to take the Child from the young man who stands behind the table. On the right kneels the Virgin with St Joseph standing behind, and in front of her on the first step is a wicker basket containing the doves. Four onlookers fill the background, and the composition is closed on the left by a candle bearer. The classical architectural background on the right is balanced by a dado on the left, and in very low relief between the two are seen two small figures apparently walking away over a distant hill. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/terms.htm | Publisher: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Rights holder: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Subjects: | sculpture Unknown plaque | Temporal: | name=17th Century; start=1600; end=1700 | Source: | Fitzwilliam Museum | Creator: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Identifier: | http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/opacdire... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | text/html | Go to resource |
