Image shows people assembled for a carnival in the grounds of Coteroyd House seen in the background. The horses harnessed to the cart are decorated with horse brasses. Two men in bowler hats are standing on board the cart which is strewn with hay and contains a bull. Bull's horns decorate the cart and young man in an apron with a basket is mounted on the leading horse. Coteroyd House was the home of the Stanhope family. In the 19th century this family were large flock manufacturers. Later, one of them, Edwin Stanhope, became a large land and property owner in the district. The house no longer exists but was located in the Back Green area. Information by Bob Dennis.
