Description: | This portrait shows a woman painted in vivid and striking bright colours. She has a serious expression on her face but the warmth from the bold colours create a sense of beauty against her long flowing hair. The portrait has been painted realistically showing all of her facial features, her rosy complexion and her distinctive large eyes. Little is known about the woman in the painting apart from her being a daughter of a local farmer. He painted many scenes which included women. William Roberts was one of the founding members of the influential Vorticist group who painted modern life shown as an array of bold lines and harsh colours, dominantly attracting the eye to the centre of the artworks. He studied at the Slade School of Art and St Martin's School of Art and travelled widely. After Joining the Royal Artillery as a gunner, he was later chosen to become a war artist during WWI. He had many major shows with the Vorticist artists and exhibited widely.
